The Ancona Duck

The Ancona was developed in Great Britain during the early twentieth century and most likely originated from Runner ducks and Huttegen ducks, an old Belgian duck. This is the same foundation stock as the Magpie duck.  They have been raised in the United States for several decades and were exhibited in 1983 in Oregon. Although still rare and critically endangered, their numbers have been increasing since 1984 when they first became available to the public.

The Ancona averages 6 to 6.5 pounds and is a bit stockier than its close relative, the Magpie duck. It has a medium sized oval head, a medium-length bill, and an average neck.  The broken, mottled plumage is unique among ducks for, like Holstein cattle, there is no set design.  Any combination of white and color is acceptable as long as there are broken areas on the head, backs, sides, and underbody.  The neck is normally solid white, bills are yellow with dark green or black spotting, and the legs and feet are typically orange with black or brown markings that increase with age. (Holderread 2001, 53).  Varieties include Black, Chocolate, Blue, Lilac, Lavender, Silver and Tri-Colors.

THE PATO LOCO FARM EXPERIENCE:

"We Believe Happy Ducks Lay The Best Eggs!"

We pride ourselves in providing the best possible living conditions for our pet flock of rare Ancona ducks.  This ensures our ducks produce healthy happy baby ducks.  Our adult ducks are never cage or pen raised.  They are only securely cooped nightly to protect from predators.  We use one LED 3 watt bulb inside the duck enclosure for their benefit and exterior lighting to deter predators.  Our females are not forced to lay eggs year round, some just choose to.  We do not use breeding pens.  Our girls live carefree happy lives.  All ducklings are hatched in incubators.  It is important to Pato Loco Sales that our customers know how we treat our pets.

When you arrive at our Ancona Duck Farm to adopt your baby ducks, you can take your time playing with the ducklings to ensure you get your perfect picks!  You can also view our adult ducks while they freely play and swim in our spacious country lot.  We always hand raise all ducklings from hatching till adoption.  We include a complete care instruction sheet and will gladly answer all your questions before and after you adopt.

Our ducks & eggs are free of pesticides, steroids, hormones, & antibiotics.  Our flock is allowed to forage naturally and is fed fresh vegetable/fruits.  They eat only Michigan natural grains.  We sell Fresh Duck Eggs for Eating year round and Pure Breed Ancona Ducklings for Pets during the hatching season April - June.  We sell Ancona Hatching Eggs from March - July.  We sell all Supplies needed to raise ducklings.  Please feel free to browse throughout the website.  Thank you!

PATO LOCO SALES EQUIPMENT IMPROVEMENTS

Pato Loco Sales has upgraded its hatching capabilities by purchasing a cabinet style incubator.  We can now achieve a better hatch rate and increase our production.

Due to the record setting long and severe 2013-2014 Winter, power outages during 2014 Spring storms, and flooding, Pato Loco Sales had experienced low duck egg laying causing sparse or no egg hatchings that Spring.  In response to these issues Pato Loco Sales has acquired not only a Cabinet Style Incubator but an Automatic Standby Generator and Uninterruptable Power Supply System, and Medical/Industrial Grade Climate Control Monitoring.
